STD FAQs:
If you are sexually active with different partners, every contact is a potential exposure, so regular testing even if you don’t have symptoms is advisable.
It can take a few days for pathogens to multiply and be detected on a test. For greatest accuracy, we recommend testing at least 1 week after potential exposure.
STDs are often asymptomatic, which is why it’s so important to test even if you don’t have any symptoms. Common symptoms usually include vaginal discharge, pain with sex, pain with urination, and penile discharge.
STDs create inflammation in the genital tract which can lead to scarring. When there is scarring, the normal function of the reproductive organs can be impacted which can lead to infertility and long term complications. There is also the immediate risk that the disease will go up the genital tract causing something called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which can lead to a serious full body infection.
